What's The Story?
For as long as I can remember, music has been a massive passion of mine. As a child I was always singing, taking music lessons, beating drums and dreaming big!
But it was only in 2013 that music and performance became a career for me. However, it wasn’t as a wedding singer!
After working in hospitality part-time since the age of 17 and eventually full-time in my 20’s, I made the brave decision to wave goodbye to a weekly pay cheque. At the age of around 30 I decided to pursue a career in music. Working in bars, restaurants and nightclubs taught me a lot. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I felt I had given all I could give and it was time for a change.
Safe to say, the diary didn’t look too exciting. At most, I had maybe 10 gigs booked in for the remainder of that year. But as they say… when the going gets tough….
As a youngster I had taken part in various school and college music and stage productions and had studied music at third level. I recorded some demos with friends and around 2002/2003 I had performed at a handful of wedding ceremonies. So it was time to get busy and the first thing I did was hit the recording studio.
As the gigs and weddings slowly started to come in, my plan was to revisit my love for songwriting, which had fallen by the wayside in my early 20’s. I could use my gig money to fund the recording and to pay session musicians.
I recorded and released my first EP “This Way Up” in 2015 and numerous releases have followed since.
Some of my releases 2015 - 2019
This Way Up (2015) | Tried & Treasured (2016) | Ghostlight Sessions (2018) | Honest (2019)
Hi My name is barry jay hughes. this is one of my own songs......
“This Way Up” was released on April 16th 2015 and a sold out theatre show (304 bums on seats) followed that. This was good. This was very good!!
CD’s were pressed and now I had merch to take with me on the road.
I travelled around Ireland as a “singer-songwriter” for about 3 years solid playing open mic slots and singer songwriter nights. I’d be sharing the stage with poets, spoken word artists, the wacky, the weird and some of the most talented singers and musicians I’ve ever heard.
The length of my set would vary. Sometimes I’d get to perform two songs, other nights I might be lucky enough to get a longer slot of 6 or 8 songs. I began to make a lot of friends on the road and made a lot of memories along the way. And I can say, because I’ve been told, that I made a name for myself as one of the hardest working musicians at that level of the music scene at the time.
But it didn’t come easy and It was tough going at times, I didn’t have a car at the time so my life was all about buses and trains, timetables, bad coffee, no coffee, late nights, B&B’s more buses…. all while constantly trying to keep my set of songs fresh and trying to write as much new material as possible.
And of course I’d be hoping people would buy my CD’s. They did, but I’ve an awful lot still left hahahaha
I’ll Just have The One!
One particular gig sticks out in my memory. I travelled to Cork to play at an Open Mic night in Gallagher’s on the corner of MacCurtain St. It took me 5 hours and 2 bus journeys to get there and I still managed to arrive early that evening. It was evident that it was going to be a busy night, I was told that I was first up and each performer had ONE SONG!!! One song? A 10 hour round trip for one song? I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to request a second or third song because it was my first visit to this particular singer-songwriter night and I didn’t want to make a bad impression.
Let’s just say I was slightly less than disheartened. I didn’t hang around long after my song (which was frowned upon on the Open Mic scene), I hopped on the next bus and made it back as far as Dublin for a drink before closing time.
But I know I shouldn’t dwell on the bad memories though, because the good times far outweigh the bad.
My song “Full Circle” (2016) is actually written about life on the road and the accompanying music video (featured further down) is an artistic representation of struggle, hard work and the relief of reaching goals as a solo singer songwriter.

Not your average Wedding Singer...
It was a slow transition, and an unintentional one, but eventually the wedding work started to overtake the original music gigs and I could see myself having less time for writing and recording.
Now setting my sights on the future, I felt it was more beneficial to concentrate on my wedding work and other private gigs as well as the occasional bar gig. This way I still get to live out my dream of being a singer and musician and having a full-time career in music, travelling around Ireland entertaining the masses (no pun intended) as a wedding singer.
My little business “Wedding Singer Éire” was born and it goes from strength to strength each year. Every good business needs a tagline too right?
What’s mine?
Not Your Average Wedding Singer!
To be continued...
This is, as you can imagine, the shortened version of the story from 2014 onwards.
Other highlights included trips to Poland and Sweden to perform at festivals and private events. An unforgettable gig in the prestigious Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Bar, London. A 17 date tour of Ireland with my friends Greg Clifford & Iann Brennan and the release of the feature film “Back To Basics” that followed.
Not forgetting numerous sold out shows in my hometown of Carrickmacross.
And then the weddings… performing in Castles, Private Estates, on The Cliffs of Moher, The Aran Islands, in beautiful Cathedrals and Churches… – I really would not swap this job for any other.
